Finally typing emails on your iPhone in wide mode

October 28, 2008 · Filed Under Web Apps · Comment

I really have a hard time typing emails in the vertical format of the iPhone or iPod touch, it’s just uncomfortable and on top of that my fat fingers always hit the the wrong key.

Problem Solved!

There is a web based application called Wide Mail Keyboard. Remember the web apps? These are the web based apps before the actual app store came out, and there are still a lot of great web apps out there.

That said Wide Mail Keyboard rocks, it allows you to type your emails on the wide keyboard; once you complete your message you click Send to Email and it automatically adds the text to your iPhones email app. You just add the email of the person you are sending to and press send.

Simply save the apps link to your desktop so you always have one click access to it  and your done. I’m giving this app 5 thumbs because it’s totally useful and makes sending email on your iPhone or iPod touch comfortable.

Pac Man the 80′s blast so good for the iPhone

October 25, 2008 · Filed Under Games · Comment

Growing up in the 80′s I remember walking 10 miles to Vals Pizzaria and spending the whole day eating pizza, drinking soda and playing Pac Man. Those where the days. Since that time I have seen so many versions of Pac Man some good some bad, but the version for the iPhone and iPod Touch is actually pretty cool. My main concern was the controls and let me start by saying it’s not as good as an actual joystick used on the arcade game itself.

There are three options for control:

  1. The virtual joystick
  2. Actually moving the iPhone/Touch in the direction you want to go
  3. Sweeping your finger in the direction you want to move

The virtual joysick is the best of the three and the one I believe most people will use. The graphics are excellent they are identical to the arcade. The one downside is the $9.99 price tag. It’s just not worth the price. Being one of the first games for the iPhone you would think they would drop the price like many of the other older apps have been doing. What they have done is created a free version with only one level and it does not work with the 1st generation iPod Touch which is kind of a bummer.

It’s a really good game if you are an old time Pac Man or Mrs Pac Man fan and I think if they dropped the price to $4.99 they would sell a lot more.

We give it 3 thumbs up.

NFL Football on your iPhone and iPod Touch

October 20, 2008 · Filed Under Uncategorized · 4 Comments

I have reviewed several of the Football applications for the iPhone and iPod Touch, but I think I have found the one that I will use for the rest of the season. Pro Football by Zumobi is a really cool app. First off there is an app for each team, in my case I have Pro Football Dolphins; so you have the app for your favorite team. But it’s not limited to just your team, you do get all the news from your club, but you also get scores, stats and news for all the teams in the NFL.

Graphically its a great looking app; and functions as advertised. If you’re an NFL fan you don’t want to miss out on Pro Football by Zumobi.

I’m giving it 4 thumbs up. I would give it 5 but it’s missing video highlights.

Looking for answers to important questions, then don’t look to the Answers app.

October 17, 2008 · Filed Under Social Networking · Comment

Everyone has questions, how great would it be to post a question and get an answer. Yahoo has a site that does this called Yahoo Answers and it’s so so, I often find that people answer questions that really don’t have a good answer.

What a great idea to create an iPhone app with this concept. Well there is a solution, it’s called Answers. But is it really a good solution?

The applications functionality is pretty nice and it seems like it’s well designed. However there is no one moderating the questions and basically every other question is curse words and sexual comments. There are very few good questions, it’s mostly meaningless questions that looks like people are just posting to see it it works.

The smut and sexual comments make this app totally useless and something that you just don’t want to use. I quess I never realized how many idiots have iPhones until I started using this application.

That said we give this app no ranking, and is not reccomended for kids at all.

My Own Worst Enemy on the itunes store.

Last night was the season premier of “My Own Worst Enemy” the new series on NBC starring Christian Slater. All I have to say is that it’s one wild ride. Go over to the iTunes store this morning and pick it up in HD.

I don’t want to give much away in terms of the plot, but it is a pretty good show that you have to follow and only take breaks during the commercials, which makes downloading from iTunes and watching on your iPhone, iPod Touch or Apple TV a real benefit.

Milebug saves you time and money; and is a MUST have for any business owner

October 11, 2008 · Filed Under Business · Comment

Owning a small business is not all fun and money; in fact it’s a lot more work than anyone ever thinks. Fact is you wear many hats and have to keep track of every little thing. Long ago my accountant told me I had to keep track of my mileage; and let me tell you it was a nightmare. I tried everything, spreadsheets, an awful little application on my Palm Zire (that’s what I had several years ago). Problem was I could never get it right. NEVER.

It came to the point that I had a 5 subject notebook on my car seat and would log the miles as I entered my car. I felt like a bus driver logging in for my daily shift. End result was I told my accountant every year “10,000 miles”. I just could not keep up with it.

My life changed last week when I was contacted by the guys at Milebug and asked to take a look at their mileage application called Milebug.

I downloaded Milebug and was really happy to see how easy it was to use. Since I’m a visual person I loved the interface, it was clean and appealing to the eye. What’s really nice about Milebug is that it’s simple to use. They really did their homework when putting this application together. Because let’s face it; the last thing you want to do is spend time trying to figure out how to use an application just to record your mileage.

What I really like is that you can set up names for the different destinations ahead of time a real time saver. Something as simple as calculating the actual mileage showing the dollar amount is awesome. Believe it or not that old app I used on my Palm Zire would not even calculate the miles; I had to enter the start and stop and do the math myself. Crazy!

I have a couple of different businesses and one of them I have a car that I use just for that business. Milebug allows me to keep track of several different businesses as well as each different car. This is a great feature for a small fleet; maybe you own a landscaping company and have 5 different trucks, your drivers log their miles and you enter the date in Milebug at the end of each day. Another feature I love is the ability to email reports. Lets say your fleet and each driver has an iPhone and the Milebug application, at the end of the day each driver can email their daily reports to you in an excel friendly format all ready for your accountant.

Milebug is one of the few applications that has made it to my front page of applications. For business owners and anyone who drives for a living; Milebug is a must have application.

Hands down we give it 5 thumbs up. Boy it’s great to see those dollar amounts go up.

The makers of iGolf bring us iBowl

October 10, 2008 · Filed Under Games · Comment

Interactive gaming on your iPhone; if you told me this 6 months ago I would have said you’re crazy. iBowl is sick fun. I reviewed iGolf about a week ago and just loved it. This week I found iBowl the second FREE game from SGN. My only question is why are they not charging for these games? They are great.

You open up iBowl hold down the BOWL button and then go into the full motion of throwing a bowling ball down the lane. It’s so Nintendo Wii. The graphics are good, the game play is pure fun.

You cannot go wrong with iBowl. We give it 5 thumbs up because it’s just sick cool.

I don’t golf, but I really enjoy iGolf for the iPhone.

October 6, 2008 · Filed Under Games · 6 Comments

Imagine taking the Nintendo Wii and shrinking it down to a handheld video game player. Well imagine no more. The iPhone or iPod Touch equipped with the iGolf app is the most interactive game app to date.

When I downloaded this FREE game I thought I was just getting another boring golf video game; but was I surprised when I found out it is was more than that. iGolf is a fully interactive video golf game. You select your course, have an option of three clubs and then hold your iPhone or iPod touch as you would a real golf club. Press the set button and take an actual golf swing. Get the ball all the way up to the green and then select your putter to knock it in the hole.

This game is a lot of fun, but beware if you never swung a golf club before you could pull out your back as I did. The embarresing part comes when someone asks how you did it. “I umm hurt it playing, uhh golf on my iPhone”.

The game play is good, the graphics are excellent; the only problem is when putting it’s not very sensitive so you end up swiging a little harder and over hit the hole. I don’t find myself playing it all that much; but I do use it to demo the iPod Touch and everybody is amazed by it.

SGN is the game designer and they just released a bowling game also FREE that I’m going to try out tonight. Please make a baseball, football and hockey game.

I give this game 4 thumbs up; it’s very cool, unique and would have gave it 5 if it was not for the putting issue.
