Are you ready for some football; baseball, basketball and hockey?

September 30, 2008 · Filed Under Entertainment · 2 Comments

Finally a good application for the sports buff. I did a review of the Pro Football App a few weeks ago and although the idea is a good one, the application itself falls short of success. The developer sent a message here on the site saying they had worked out some of the bugs; but after using it this last Sunday I experienced some of the same problems. The constant refresh just hangs it up.

So I ventured out to find an app to fill my NFL addiction. I came across Score Mobile another free NFL App for the iPhone or iPod Touch and really enjoy it; it does not give you the play by play features but it does keep you up to date with scores. You can click on the scoring tab located on left side of the screen and see the scoring drive results. Under that you get player stats and the last tab is the recap of the game. Another nice feature is the ability to check the stats on any of the past weeks. As well as look ahead to the future games including preview and injury reports.

You have control over the refresh and you can select between 2 minutes, 5 minutes and never. Never update is a great feature for Dolphin fans like myself. :)

What I like most about Score is although the NFL is my favorite game, I do like to glance at scores of other sports like the NBA, MLB and NHL and Score Mobile covers all of them. For those who are interested it also covers the CFL and NCAA football.

The application is well designed, very clean and works as advertised. For NFL fans who just want the scores quick and easy download Score Mobile today.

I give is 5 thumbs up because it does what it says and it does it well.

I went to bed last night in the city; tonight I’m sleeping at the beach

September 29, 2008 · Filed Under Entertainment · Comment

It’s true last night I went to sleep in the city; it was nice I could hear the light traffic of the cars going by in the distance. I felt like I was spending the night in New York City. Tonight I’m going to sleep at my beach house; and this Friday I going to take a nap in the woods while camping. I can do all this from my bedroom with my iPod Touch and the Ambiance App.

I’m the type who cannot just lay down in bed and fall asleep; if I did I would lay there for hours; even if I’m tired. I require a book; or what I usually do is listen to a podcast on my iPod. So when I came across this App called Ambiance; I had a sudden interest in it.

What Ambiance does is plays a never ending loop of background sound effects. You remember the old ocean sound effects clocks that you would place on your night stand and go to sleep with. Well Ambiance does that; but rather than be limited to just the ocean it has 45 different sounds to relax with.

I did listen to each one; and was a bit disappointed by a few of them. Below is my run down of each one.

1. Airplane: You get that slight hum of the inside of the airplane cabin. Kind of boring and not something I would want to listen to at bedtime; for the simple reason that I cannot fall asleep on a plane anyway.

2. Birds: This one is pretty cool, kind of feel like your in a rain forest.

3. Blue Noise: Hate it, it’s like white noise but blue; huh!

4. Brown Noise: Sounds like the airplane but just a little louder, boring.

5. Cat Purr: Sounds like an alien, I went crazy after 20 seconds

6. Cicada: This one is pretty nice, but you should listen to it real low, kind of feels like your out on a camping trip

7. Clock: This would drive anyone insane; listen to this and you will wake up in the morning with a nasty twitch

8. City: This one is real cool, you really get the feeling that you are in a city, there is also a feeling of depth in this one. Some cars pass real close and then you get noise that sounds like it’s way back.

9. Coast: I can hear the segals but I really don’t get a feel for the ocean.

10. Creek: Creek is nice; you need to keep it real low because it does not fluctuate very much; it’s just this constant flow.

11. Crickets: This is a good one, you really get the feeling of the great outdoors

12. Fan: Useless, it’s just this constant machine noise, that sounds like a vaccume cleaner

13. Fan – Oscillating: You can really hear the fan going from ear to ear; but I’m not sure why you would want too

14. Fire – Big: Not very good. I can’t even describe it.

15. Fire – Small: Sounds like raindrops on tin foil

16. Freeway: I never lived by a freeway and now I thank heavens for it. But this is a real good one. You can really hear the cars and trucks zooming by. It’s from a distance so it’s not very strong.

17. Frog: I would have preferred frogs; as in more than one. One frog makes you want to go into the shed get a gun and open fire in the dark.

18. Heartbeat – Fast: Kind of sounds like a machine generated hearbeat. Not very real and kind of annoying

19. Heartbeat – Slow: Ditto but slower

20. Light Saber: Sounds like a light saber with a bad diode that never moves back and forth

21: Machine: Sounds like the airplane but with a loose screw

22. Owl: This one is pretty cool, another outdoor adventure

23. Pink Noise: Why?

24. Rain – Car: It’s windshield wipers on a late model Ford escort

25. Rain – Light: This one is pretty cool, although it sounds a little heavier than a light rain. Lets put it this way if the rain sounded like this you would be soaked to your underwear from your front door to your car.

26. Rain – Porch: If you listen real close it sounds like someone is trying to break in the porch door while it’s raining.

27. Rain – Tinroof: I never had a tin roof, but I did have a 79 Monte Carlo with a bad muffler and it sounded exactly like this.

28. Rain – Thunder: This one is kind of cool, there is a very light rain and a slight thunder in the background, but there is a problem it just stops and never loops; goes silent.

29. Rain – Wind: Exactly the same sound as Rain-Light; not a single difference.

30. River: Pure white noise

31. Sailboat: Sailboat might not be a good name for this one, should call it dock. You can hear the water hitting something

32. Shower: This is as realistic as it gets, you can hear the water going down the drain and all

33. Sonar: This could drive anyone crazy, it’s exactly what it says

34. Stream: Running water, listen to it real low and it could be very soothing

35. Subway: This one is pretty realistic. Sounds like a real underground subway

36. Swamp: Just what you would imagine, all those little night crawlers making their noises in the distance.

37. Train: Rather than being in the subway you are actually on the train. This would be great for New Yorkers on their way to work who like the train sound but can’t stand those idiots that talk so loud on their cell phones.

38. Vinyl: Only those who can remember the sound of a record when it gets to the end will know what this even is.

39. Violet Noise: When I first saw this one I thought it said Violent noise; I was so excited I thought I was going to hear a stick fight in Brooklyn.  It’s just like all the other noise sounds, why?

40. Waterfall: Sounds more like the waterfall at the water park than out in the great outdoors.

41. Waves: Waves is cool. I will use this one tonight

42. Whale: Kind of cool. Sounds like you are on the beach and you hear the whales in the background.

43. White Noise: Stop, I didn’t need all these different colored noises.

44. Wind: Much to constant, sounds like the airplane sound on the beach

45. Wind Haunting: This one is pretty realistic, you can hear the wind howling, should have called it Key West in August. (Get it? hurricane season).

All in all it’s a pretty good application. You won’t like all the sounds it has, but with 45 different sounds you are bound to find a bunch you enjoy. For only .99 you can’t go wrong.

I give it 3 thumbs up, only because I could not find my 2 thumbs up graphic and I really liked a few of the sounds and how can you complain for .99, I mean they have CD sets like this that sell for over $14.00.

Another problem with this app is you might not want to use it with your iPhone; could you imagine listening to the waves as you are fading off to sleep and then the phone rings. Yikes you might have a heart attack. Might want to keep this app for the iPod Touch:)

Because TV shows are so popular on iTunes we are going to…

September 29, 2008 · Filed Under Entertainment · Comment

I posted an update about NBC coming back to iTunes the other day and made a reference to the hit show The Office; and received over 100 emails from fans of the show. This has inspired me to now add TV show info to this blog. I personally love watching TV shows on my iPod that this seems like a no brainer. So in the coming days you will see TV show updates, reviews and just plain old fun stuff here on the site.

I think this is important; because there are a lot of good shows I have personally found on iTunes that I never even thought to watch on TV. I would also love to hear about the little gems you have found as well.

NBC’s The Office back on iTunes

September 27, 2008 · Filed Under Entertainment · 1 Comment

Yes I know this is not an app or an Accessory but it’s worth saying that The Office is back on iTunes. I could never figure out why NBC pulled out of iTunes in the first place after all it was iTunes that made The Office the smash hit that it is today. Yes it’s true. NBC was about to axe The Office because the ratings were bad, but after seeing the popular sales of the now popular TV series on iTunes; The Office is now a cult classic.

I’m excited that I can now go back to living in my on demand world and watch The Office in bed on my iPod Touch.

Griffin Roadtrip works great for playing iPod touch through the radio

September 27, 2008 · Filed Under Accessory Updates · Comment

The best way to play your iPod through your car’s stereo was always the cassette adapter, but who has a cassette player in their car anymore. Now more and more cars are coming with iPod jacks so you can connect and play. But still some cars don’t have that feature.

There is however a solution for those of us that don’t have a direct connection. There are many FM transmitters on the market and for the longest time I have used the Monster connector; don’t get me wrong it works great it transmits and charges at the some time; but the problem is the display to change the channels. It uses red LED’s that you just can’t see during the day. At night it’s perfect but most of my time driving is during the daytime hours. Another thing I hate about the Monster connector is the controls; after 5 years I still don’t really know how to use it.

Griffin has a great product called the RoadTrip with Smart Scan. This unit is very cool. You plug it into your lighter jack and the rugged goose neck holds your iPod Touch up so you can clearly see the display. The LCD display is easy to see in the day or night and easy touch buttons make it simple to select an open channel. With this super cool feature called Smart Scan; Roadtrip scans looking for the  three clearest channels to transmit on and selects the best of the three and automatically tunes to it. This makes listening to your iPod in the car clear and enjoyable.

At $99.99 it’s one of the higher priced transmitters, but with the smartscan feature, ease of use, durable quality and excellent reception it is  well worth the money.

Another great product from Griffin.

Micro blogging with Pownce on your iPhone

September 26, 2008 · Filed Under Social Networking · Comment

I’m sure you all heard of Twitter; well if you have not you must be living under a rock. In any event, if you have heard or even use Twitter and are just not happy with it because it’s down so much. Then you should look into Pownce. Pownce is a great little micro blogging app. At Pownce.com it’s really clean fast and nice, and on the iPhone it’s even better. When you first log on you are prompted to send a note, photo, link or event.

Note: simple text area, write whatever you desire.

Photo: this opens up your photos apps so you can quickly attach a photo to send

Link: Type in a url, this create a button that links to where ever

Event: What, where, when.

You can follow others just like Twitter.

I enjoy the Pownce service, it’s designed well, it always works and it’s another place to network with friends and soon to be friends. The iPhone Pownce app is just great, they did a great job with it, so much so that it really feels like an extension of the online version.

Try it for yourself I know you will like it.

We give it 5 thumbs up.

Cro Mag Rally for iPhone feels like a stone age game

September 23, 2008 · Filed Under Games · Comment

One of the very first racing games for the iPhone and iPod Touch was Cro Mag Rally. It’s that caveman racing game; where you are a caveman driving a Flintstones looking car. When I first saw this game demoed at the Apple event; I thought “Wow that is cool” but I never got around to playing it. Very quickly other racing games came out like Crash Bandicoot Nitro Cart and Asphalt 4 which are both excellent games.

So while searching the App store I came accross Cro Mag Rally at the discounted rate of $1.99 and made the purchase. I’m a video Race Car Driver by nature (video game racing fan). They compare this game so much to Crash; a game that I love. So I figured let’s try it.

The result, well let’s just say that if I would have purchased this game at the original price of $9.99 I would have felt cheated. In fact at $1.99 I look at it as a $1.99 wasted. If I would have purchased this game before trying any of the other racing games I think I would have liked it; but I find it boring, slow and I hate have to keep my finger on the display to give the car gas.

If you like racing games and you never tried any of the others like Crash or Asphalt and you don’t want to spend $9.99 for a game; then you might like this game; but if you already have Asphalt or Crash you won’t get anything out of this game.

I give it 1 thumb because it’s cheap.

Griffin Technology puts Vegas in your pocket

September 22, 2008 · Filed Under Games · Comment

My favorite iPod Accessory company is Griffin Technology, I love the products they create. I love the quality of their products. Griffin has expanded it’s product line to iPhone applications and one very cool one is the FREE iSlots app. I have played a few of the different slot machine apps from the itunes store but iSlots is by far the best; the graphics are perfect. It looks exactly like a real slot machine.

There is really not much to it; you basically sit there and push the bet button and that’s it. It’s just a simple fun game; that can get a little addictive.

What would be really cool is if Griffin could turn this into a marketing tool and actually give prizes for winnings; like coupons for product discounts and even product prizes. Kind of like the ticket system at the arcades when you play skee ball. Just an idea.

There is not much to this app, but for what it is; it’s pretty cool.

I give it 3 thumbs up because the graphics are excellent and it’s just plain fun.
